Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program News
Jan. 17, 2014In this issue:
- Work to resume tunneling continues
- State Route 99 tunnel north access contract awarded
- South Atlantic Street Overpass opens this month
- Building a better transportation system
Crews are working to determine what caused Bertha, the SR 99 tunneling machine, to experience increasing resistance as she approached South Main Street last month. Since our contractor, Seattle Tunnel Partners, stopped tunneling on Dec. 6, crews have performed a series of investigations both inside and outside of the machine. They have found some clues about what slowed Bertha's progress, but the overall cause won't be known until the investigation is completed.
Significant work continues at the future tunnel portals and elsewhere on the project, and crews are looking for opportunities to recover schedule. Regular updates about Bertha are available at our website and on Twitter by following @BerthaDigsSR99.
State Route 99 tunnel north access contract awarded
Construction of new ramps that will connect the existing lanes of SR 99 to the north entrance of the future SR 99 tunnel will get underway this winter.
The Washington State Department of Transportation awarded the $41.6 million contract to Guy F. Atkinson Construction, LLC of Renton, Wash. The contract is nearly $4.5 million under WSDOT's estimate.
The SR 99 North Access Connection Project will connect the SR 99 tunnel's north entrance at Harrison Street to the existing roadway north of the Mercer Street bridge. It will also build new on- and off-ramps at Republican and Harrison streets, extend Sixth Avenue North between Harrison and Mercer streets, and improve water and sewer lines in the area.
There is already heavy construction in the neighborhood. Our tunnel contractor, Seattle Tunnel Partners, is building the tunnel's north entrance and the Seattle Department of Transportation is building the new Mercer Corridor. We will work closely with our partner agencies to minimize impacts on the traveling public. Visit our website for an interactive map of the north access project.
South Atlantic Street Overpass opens this month
Later this month, we'll open a new overpass at the south end of downtown Seattle. Stretching above State Route 99 to the west of the stadiums, the overpass will allow traffic to bypass a busy railroad track that crosses South Atlantic Street near the entrance to the Port of Seattle's busiest freight terminal. That's good news for anyone who uses East Marginal Way South to travel through SODO, and especially good news for the freight haulers who make frequent trips to and from the terminal.
In addition to the new overpass, the project is building a new section of permanent bicycle and pedestrian path to the west of SR 99. Scheduled to open in winter 2014, this new section will complete the path between South Atlantic Street and South King Street, and provide bicyclists and pedestrians safe access between SODO and downtown neighborhoods.
Building a better transportation system
The Washington State Department of Transportation is working to build a safer, more durable, effective transportation system for our citizens. All across the state – from Bellingham to Vancouver, Forks to Spokane – we manage hundreds of important transportation projects each year to upgrade or replace aging roads and bridges, increase capacity for carrying people and freight, and create more environmentally sustainable travel options for the public.
You've been hearing a lot lately about our efforts to replace the SR 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct. This is a big, complex undertaking. And as we all know, we've encountered some challenges. We are committed to responsibly managing these challenges and completing the work at hand. As we do that, we will continue to be transparent about our progress and challenges along the way.
To that end, we invite you to read a brief newsletter (pdf 2.4 Mb) that highlights the many things we accomplished in 2013. Despite the obstacles we currently face, we are making progress, and we expect to see continued progress in 2014.
