SR 99 to close this weekend through Seattle
The State Route 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct will be closed for additional inspection work Saturday, March 22.
Bridge inspectors will close all lanes of the viaduct between South Spokane Street and the Battery Street Tunnel from 4:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. During the closure, crews will install monitoring devices on the viaduct to track the movement and growth of cracks over time. Engineers will use this data to help identify potential repairs.
Although vulnerable to earthquakes, the viaduct remains safe for everyday use. It will continue to provide a vital link to and through downtown Seattle until the SR 99 tunnel opens to traffic.
Click here to learn more about the things we've done to keep the viaduct safe.
In addition to Saturday's viaduct inspection closure, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will have a nighttime closure on southbound SR 99 as well as daytime closures of the Mercer Street ramps to I-5 as part of the Mercer Corridor Project. SDOT crews will close all southbound lanes of SR 99 between Valley and Thomas streets for girder setting from 11 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday.
The closures are part of a busy weekend of road work. Be sure to plan ahead and check traffic conditions before you head out.

Tolling committee's advisory recommendations finalized
The Advisory Committee on Tolling and Traffic Management (ACTT) released its advisory recommendations for tolling the SR 99 tunnel, which describe their recommended toll strategy and policies that could help mitigate diversion. These recommendations were shared with the Governor, Legislature, State Transportation Commission, WSDOT, Seattle Mayor and the Seattle City Council.
WSDOT and the City of Seattle established the committee in 2011 to make recommendations on strategies for tolling the SR 99 tunnel to raise revenue while minimizing and mitigating traffic diversion onto city streets and I-5.
WSDOT, the Seattle Mayor and Seattle City Council jointly appointed the committee members, who were selected to represent various interests, including freight, retail, drivers, labor, bicycle and pedestrian interests, large employers, waterfront businesses, adjacent and affected neighborhoods, transit riders and low-income people.
Toll rates will be set by the Washington State Transportation Commission before the tunnel opens to traffic. The public will have an opportunity to comment on proposed toll rates during the Commission's rate setting process.
